WorthThePump is a free UK fuel savings calculator. We are committed to handling your personal data responsibly and in compliance with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

What data we collect

Vehicle registration numbers (VRN)

When you enter a UK number plate, it is sent to our server via a POST request body (never in the URL). We use it to look up your vehicle specifications via the DVLA VES API. For anonymous (non-logged-in) users, the VRN is never stored in our database. We cache vehicle specifications (make, fuel type, engine size, CO2) for 24 hours using a one-way hash of the registration to avoid repeat DVLA API calls, but the registration itself is not stored or logged.

Location data

We use your browser's Geolocation API to find petrol stations near you. Your coordinates are sent to our server to query the fuel price database. We do not store your location coordinates for anonymous users.

Anonymous usage statistics

We log the following for each search, without any personally identifying information: fuel type (petrol/diesel), search radius, number of stations found. This helps us understand how the tool is used. No IP addresses are stored in these logs.

Account data (optional)

WorthThePump does not require an account. If you create an account in the future, we will collect your name and email address. See future updates to this policy.

Cookies

We use a minimal session cookie to maintain your session state across page loads. We do not use tracking cookies or analytics cookies beyond what is required for the service to function.

If Google AdSense ads are displayed on the site, Google may set cookies for advertising purposes. You can opt out via Google Ads Settings.

Third-party services

DVLA VES API — Used to look up vehicle specifications by registration number. Subject to DVLA's terms of use.
UK Government Fuel Finder API — Used to retrieve live petrol and diesel prices. Public API data mandated by the Competition and Markets Authority.
Google AdSense — May display advertisements. Google's privacy policy applies to advertising cookies.

Since WorthThePump does not store VRNs or location data for anonymous users, we hold minimal personal data for most users. Contact us at hello@worththepump.com to exercise your rights.
