?The problem

Diesel typically costs 5–8p/litre more than petrol and is stocked at fewer stations. When prices vary, they vary more — a 15p/litre spread between the cheapest and most expensive diesel within 5 miles of a given postcode is not unusual. Diesel drivers pay more at baseline and have fewer options, yet most price-comparison apps don't surface the best diesel deals clearly.

How WorthThePump helps

WorthThePump automatically detects your fuel type from your number plate — if you drive a diesel, we filter every result to diesel prices only. You see a map of all diesel stations within your radius, with clear savings calculations. No accidentally comparing petrol prices to your diesel car.

  • Automatic fuel-type detection from your plate — no manual selection needed
  • Diesel-only filtering on the results map so you never see irrelevant petrol prices
  • Diesel price variation tends to be higher in rural and northern UK — the map makes this visible
  • Works for mild-hybrid diesel vehicles — PHEV and full EV are handled separately

Common questions

Why is diesel more expensive than petrol in the UK?

Diesel carries a higher fuel duty rate in the UK and has done since 2022, when the duty advantage that once made diesel cheaper to operate was removed. The refinery margin on diesel is also higher. This makes finding the cheapest local diesel even more important — the absolute saving per pence per litre is higher because the baseline price is higher.

Do all petrol stations sell diesel?

No. Some smaller independent forecourts and supermarket petrol stations in less densely populated areas are petrol-only. WorthThePump only shows stations that have live diesel price data — so if a station doesn't appear in your results, either it doesn't sell diesel or its prices haven't been reported recently.

How accurate are the diesel prices shown?

Prices come from the UK government's Fuel Finder API, which aggregates data from fuel retailers and is updated hourly. Prices are generally accurate to within a few hours of your search. Always verify the price at the pump — occasionally stations update their forecourt prices before the API refreshes.

Should I add fuel additives to cheap supermarket diesel?

Supermarket diesel meets the same British Standard as branded diesel (BS EN 590). You don't need additives for a modern diesel engine. If you're driving a high-performance or older engine and have concerns, consult your vehicle's handbook — but for the vast majority of diesel drivers, supermarket diesel is perfectly adequate.
