Use Case

Is Cheaper Petrol Worth the Detour on a Motorbike?

Motorcycles have small tanks (12–18L) so the maths is tighter. Find out if that cheap petrol station is worth the detour for your bike — with real numbers.

?The problem

You ride a Honda CB500 or a Kawasaki Z650. Your tank holds 15 litres — roughly half that of a car. On a £20 fill, even a 10p/litre price difference only saves £1.50 gross. Once you factor in the fuel you burn on a 2-mile round-trip detour, that saving can disappear entirely. Most riders assume cheap petrol is always worth it, but for bikes the break-even threshold is much closer than for cars.

How WorthThePump helps

WorthThePump's calculation is especially valuable for motorbike riders because the maths is tighter. We factor in your bike's MPG (which is often higher than a car's, meaning detour fuel costs are lower) and your tank size to give you a precise net saving. You'll quickly see whether the nearby BP or the cheaper Shell a mile away is actually the better choice.

  • Bikes have high MPG — detour fuel costs are low, which actually helps the calculation in your favour
  • Small tanks mean the gross saving is smaller, so the net saving is more sensitive to detour distance
  • The break-even distance calculator shows exactly how far you can travel for the price difference to be worthwhile
  • Supports all registered UK bikes and scooters via the DVLA lookup

Worked example

Honda CB500F

Real-world MPG: 65 • Fill amount: £20

Nearest station

196p/L

Cheaper station

184p/L

Litres filled (£20)~1L
Price difference12p/L cheaper
Gross saving (1L × 12p)0.12
Detour cost (1 miles at 65 MPG)−£0.13

Net saving

£1.28

✅ Worth it — but only just. 3-mile detour would tip negative

Common questions

Why is cheaper petrol less valuable for motorcycle riders than car drivers?

It comes down to tank size. A 10p/litre saving on a 15L bike tank is £1.50 gross. The same saving on a 50L car tank is £5. Once you subtract the fuel cost of the detour, a small saving can easily become zero or negative for a bike. That's why WorthThePump's net saving calculation is particularly important for riders.

Does WorthThePump work for motorcycle registration plates?

Yes. The DVLA VES API covers all registered UK vehicles including motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds. Enter your bike's full UK registration plate and the calculator will look up the make, engine size, and MPG automatically.

My MPG is much higher than the default shown — can I override it?

Yes. In step 2 of the calculator, you can manually adjust the MPG figure. Experienced riders often achieve significantly better fuel economy than the official figure — especially on longer runs. Entering your real-world MPG will give you a more accurate saving calculation.

How much price difference do I need for a detour to be worthwhile on a bike?

As a rough guide, for a 500cc bike (65 MPG, 15L tank): 1 mile of detour needs about 4–5p/litre price difference to break even. 2 miles needs 8–10p/litre. Beyond 3 miles, the detour rarely makes sense on a small tank. WorthThePump shows the exact break-even for your specific bike.
